Design that works for every kind of brain

Autistic people, people with ADHD or dyslexia, and anyone who is tired or stressed: they all need a service that is calm, clear and predictable. WCAG covers only part of that. We design for how people really read, think and focus, together with neurodivergent and neurotypical people.

Sounds familiar?

  • People say our website is overwhelming.
  • We meet WCAG, but people still get lost.
  • We want to be inclusive, not just compliant.

What we do

  1. Listen

Interviews and tests with neurodivergent and neurotypical people, in a way that suits them: written, by video or in person.

  2. Check the load

How many choices, how much text, how much movement? What happens when someone makes a mistake or needs more time?

  3. Design for calm and control

Plain language, a clear structure, fewer choices at once and no surprises. Plus settings people can change themselves, like less motion.

  4. Test and refine

We test with the same mix of people, and improve until it works for them.

In practice

In the MSF case, part of the research was about cognitive load.

  • Doctors Without Borders Belgium

A website that works for every donor

Our part: Cognitive load in the research: 15 choices at the top of the homepage, and sentences of almost 37 words on average.

Questions

What does neurodivergent mean?

It describes a brain that works differently from what is seen as typical. For example autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia or dyspraxia.

Isn’t WCAG enough?

WCAG is the base, and it covers some of this. But many needs, like less text, fewer choices or predictable steps, go further. We look at the whole flow, not just the checklist.

Does this make the design boring?

No. Calm is not the same as dull. This website is playful, and it has a Low friction mode for people who want less.

Who takes part in the tests?

Neurodivergent and neurotypical people, recruited together with you or through our network.

Where do you work?

Juwix is a small studio in Antwerp, Belgium. We work with clients across Belgium and the rest of Europe.
